What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is one of the key electronic submission and marking tools at the University of Liverpool. The tool is integrated into Blackboard (VITAL) and has been used at the institution for a number of years and practice in some areas is well established.  Turnitin is easy to use and has a rich set of features that support e-submission, plagiarism detection, peer to peer student marking and electronic feedback in rich media.

The tool supports the following assessment requirements:

  • Students can submit a wide range of file types electronically up to 40MB *(multiple pieces of coursework and group assignments are not currently supported)
  • Students will receive an email receipt once they have submitted their work
  • Students can resubmit an assignment after the due date * (provided specific settings have been selected)
  • Students can learn about how to avoid plagiarism using the Originality report *(if enabled by the tutor)
  • Students can resubmit an assignment after the due date * (provided specific settings have been selected)
  • Staff can provide rich feedback on a piece of coursework. Annotating directly on students work, adding comments, highlighting text, rubric feedback, grading sheets and voice comments are all supported.
  • Anonymous submission is supported via desktop and on mobile

Should I use Turnitin for my assessment?

Currently, the University of Liverpool supports two electronic submission tools: Turnitin and the Blackboard Assignment Tool. If you are planning to use one of these it is important that you make the right choice at the start. We have created a simple table that should help you identify the right tool to meet your assessment needs. Click here to view the table (open in a new window). Can I use Turnitin offline?

Yes, the Turnitin App is available for the iPad and can be downloaded from the App Store. At present there is no app available to for the Windows or Android platforms.  If you plan to use this app please read the guidance and advice in the table below, or get in touch with a member of the elearning unit.
